[ARCHIVED] Police Conducted DUI Checkpoints Saturday December 15

The Frederick Police Department conducted mobile DUI checkpoints, December 15 as part of its participation in Operation Save Our Loved Ones (SOLO) 2012. The Frederick County Sheriff's Office and Brunswick Police Department participated in the Checkpoint.

The Frederick Police Department and Frederick County Highway Safety Task Force partners conducted mobile DUI checkpoints on December 15 as part of their participation in Operation Save Our Loved Ones (SOLO) 2012. The Frederick County Sheriff's Office, Frederick Police Department and Brunswick Police Department participated in the Checkpoint by providing Deputies and Officers. The departments are receiving funding from the Maryland Highway Safety Office to conduct saturation patrols and checkpoints as part of Operation SOLO 2012. At the two checkpoints on December 15, officers contacted 480 vehicles and distributed educational information to the drivers. The locations of the two checkpoints were North Market Street, North of 7th Street and North East Street, between 9th street and Delaware Avenue. Project SOLO is a Maryland Highway Safety Office initiative designed to generate broad awareness of the ongoing effort to reduce impaired driving deaths to zero.
Police will engage in Project Saving Our Loved Ones (SOLO), a statewide initiative to combat impaired driving and underage drinking through the end of December. An expansion of the standard enforcement efforts launched in October, Project SOLO deploys mass patrols on area roads that are known to have higher instances of alcohol related crashes. The high risk zones, which are identified through data analysis of crashes, will be targeted and saturated by law enforcement through the end of the year.
Project SOLO enforces Maryland’s Impaired Driving Laws, most prominently, at night. In 2010, alcohol impaired fatal crashes were four times higher at night than during the day, nationwide. Fifty five percent of drunk drivers were involved in fatal crashes between midnight and 3:00 a.m., and 42 percent between 3:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.
“Project SOLO is about taking impaired drivers off the road, saving lives and raising awareness of the importance of safe driving,” said LT Dennis Dudley, Commander Professional Services, Frederick Police Department “Every law enforcement official involved in this initiative is thoroughly trained and briefed to effectively target impaired driving.”
