Paul DesJardin to Speak on Regional Activity Centers in City
Frederick, MD -- On Tuesday, May 21st, The City of Frederick will hold two informational sessions for citizens to learn how regional and local planning efforts can merge to create dynamic Activity Centers. Keynote speaker Paul DesJardin, Director of the Department of Community Planning and Services for COG, will explain the rationale behind Activity Centers and how The City of Frederick can plug into the Regional Activity Center model. The two sessions will be held at 4:00 and 7:00 PM in the Boardroom in City Hall located at 101 North Court Street in Frederick, Maryland. Each session is free and open to the public.
The Regional Activity Centers and Clusters was developed by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments’ Metropolitan Development Policy Committee as a tool to guide land use and transportation planning decision. The Washington Council of Governments (COG), in its Regional Forward Plan, has identified four key Regional Activity Centers in The City of Frederick: Downtown Frederick, the Golden Mile, East Frederick and Fort Detrick.
A goal of City Alderman Karen Young, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of COG, is to advance COG’s new Economy Forward plan to strengthen the region’s competitiveness. Key priorities include identifying sustainable funding strategies for the region’s roads and transit as well as guiding more efficient investments in mixed-use activity centers, which help attract and retain businesses and workers. “While downtown Frederick is about forty miles from the nation’s capital, there is much more that connects us with our neighbors in metropolitan Washington than separates us,” Young said.
No RSVP is necessary for either session. For more information, please contact The City of Frederick Department of Economic Development at 301.600.6360.
