Frederick, MD -- Arbor Day was once again celebrated in The City of Frederick on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at Rock Creek School on Waverly Drive. As part of the program, students from Rock Creek School assisted with the planting of a White Oak, the official State of Maryland tree followed by the annual Arbor Day program.
The City of Frederick Audio Visual Department, under the direction of Lance Duvall, and City Arborist Tom Rippeon collaborated on the following video highlighting the Arbor Day 2013 events which can be viewed by clicking on http://cityoffrederick.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=12&clip_id=1800. Frederick is the only municipality in the State of Maryland that has held the distinction of being a Tree City USA for 33 years. In addition to the Tree City USA award, the City has received the PLANT (People Loving and Nurturing Trees) Award for 17 years. The PLANT award is a state-wide award recognizing tree planting and tree care efforts in communities.
“Arbor Day is a wonderful tradition in The City of Frederick and one I look forward to each year. It is always exciting to plant a new tree, watch our tree canopy grow and teach children the importance of trees in their community and in their lives. I like them to know that we have to have trees to exist” said Tom Rippeon, City Arborist.
Each year the National Arbor Day Foundation provides the City with a Tree City U.S.A. flag. This year that flag was presented to Rock Creek School. The Arbor Day Program is an educational opportunity for the students and the community, promoting awareness, appreciation, and stewardship of trees. Trees enhance our quality of life and add value to our community.
