Young Elected to Washington Council of Governments Leadership Team

Frederick, MD -- Karen Young, Alderman for The City of Frederick, was elected to one of the two Vice Chair positions on the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments Board of Director on Wednesday, January 11, 2012. The COG Board of Directors is made up of local and state elected officials from the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia and is responsible for the regional body’s overall policy and funding decisions. Ms. Young has served on the WASHCOG Board since 2011.
Alderman Young will serve as Vice Chair on the WASH COG Board of Directors along with Prince William County Supervisor Frank Principi, 2012 Chairman of WASH COG and Phil Mendelson, 2012 Vice Chair.
The Chairman and two vice-Chairman of the COG Board of Directors serve as the Board’s executive committee, which works with the executive director to set the Board’s annual work plan and review and approve the Board’s monthly agenda. The COG Board’s Chairmanship rotates each calendar year and is held in turn by elected officials from the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. The vice-chairs usually move up to become COG Board Chairs unless the Board decides on a different t succession schedule.
Alderman Young was elected to The City of Frederick Board of Aldermen in 2009 and serves as the President Pro Tem. In addition, Alderman Young has been a board member of the Maryland Municipal League (MML), Vice-Chair of the Legislative Committee of MML, Vice-Chair of the Air Quality Committee of WASHCOG and liaison to numerous city commissions and committees.
Ms. Young holds a BA from Franklin and Marshall College, as well as both an MA in American History and an MBA from Columbia University. With over 30 years of experience in the financial services industry, Ms. Young came to Frederick in 1996 as Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Farmers and Mechanics National Bank.
Ms. Young is extremely active in the community and has served as a volunteer or board member to over 16 community organizations. She is married to State Senator from District 3 and former City of Frederick Mayor Ron Young.
