The Frederick Police Dept. would like to notify the public of an increase in fraudulent internet advertisements. Over the past several months the Frederick Police Department has seen an increase in the false advertising on internet sources for houses/ rooms for rent. Often times the advertisement will tell the interested party NOT to go on the property. That they can only drive by the property and to contact them directly if they are interested in renting the property. When the individual calls to inquire about the property the individual placing the advertisement will often tell the person they need to put a deposit on the property now, or they will lose it. The inquiring party will put a deposit on the property and never hear from the advertiser again.
Often times the property advertised is occupied or being renovated and getting ready to be placed on the market for rent. The person advertising the property usually is out of town and their contact information will be an out of state zip code, or out of state area code. Anyone who experiences this or is suspicious that this might be occurring is encouraged to call the Frederick Police Department at 301-600-2100.
