INCIDENT/ INFORMATION: In recognition of the increase in the incidence of thefts in the city, and in particular thefts from motor vehicles, The Frederick Police Department would like to follow up on its recent release of the 2011 Uniform Crime Report by once again reminding residents to remove all valuables from their vehicles, to lock their doors when parking and to report suspicious activity immediately.
In the vast majority of cases, thefts from motor vehicles occur when valuables are left inside unlocked cars, making them crimes of opportunity. Less frequently, windows are broken to gain interior access, but even then, something of value usually has been left in plain view.
One prolific offender is presently incarcerated, but another is active in the downtown area, based on a pattern there, and another pattern is emerging in the west side of the city. FPD is employing considerable time and resources to bring these crimes to a positive resolution.
These are crimes that tend to occur in series. The Department’s emphasis on intelligence led policing has yielded successes in the form of several arrests in 2011, but theft from motor vehicle continues to be a stubborn problem to eradicate. The Frederick Police Department requests the assistance of residents in stopping these crimes.
The non-emergency telephone number for the Frederick Police Department is (301) 600-2102.
