Mayor Promotes “Buy Local Challenge”

Frederick, MD -- Mayor Randy McClement announces support of the 2014 “Buy Local Challenge” urging citizens to take the pledge to eat fresh and buy local. The annual Buy Local Challenge encourages residents to buy local produce and dine at City restaurants that serve local farm products, wine and beer.

Buy Local Challenge Week begins Saturday, July 19th and continues through Sunday, July 27th. Individuals, businesses, and organizations can take the “Buy Local Challenge Pledge” to include locally sourced items into their daily meals for one week.

In support of the Buy Local campaign, Mayor McClement challenges the Frederick community to join with him and try one new local product weekly during the growing season. “We are very fortunate to have several wonderful Farmers’ Markets within the City limits,” said Mayor McClement. “The crowds that gather at these markets show just how many people want to eat healthy and feel good about supporting our local economy. Buying local and eating fresh is a win for everyone.”

This year, supporters can “Take the Challenge to the EXTREME!” with a new photo contest. To show how you took the challenge to the extreme, take a photo of you, your family, or friends sampling items you have never tried before. The winning entry will receive a gift certificate for Maryland’s Best Ice Cream Trail plus a package of assorted goodies.
The statewide Buy Local Challenge was created by the Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission, and is jointly promoted by the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA). Buying locally ensures the preservation of farmlands, protects the environment, bolsters local economies, and provides wholesome, nutritious, and fresh foods.
