Edward P. Thomas Jr. Memorial Swimming Pool
Named Frederick’s Best!

Frederick, MD -- The Thomas Pool in Baker Park was recently named Best Swimming Pool for 2012 by the Annual Reader’s Poll conducted by Frederick Magazine. The magazine proclaims, “Baker Park has so much going for it, but the Edward P. Thomas, Jr. Memorial Swimming pool is a summertime favorite in the City’s oasis.” The Thomas Pool is located in the heart of Baker Park at 500 Fleming Ave.

Bob Smith, Recreation Supervisor said, “What a wonderful honor to be recognized by the citizens of the community. The dedicated pool staff and the wonderful management company deserve so much credit, they truly care about the pool and the facility.”

The Baker Park Pool was constructed on the Fleming Avenue site in 1927. In 1984, a major pool renovation brought upgrades to the bathhouse and concession area. At that time, the pool was renamed after Maryland State Senator Edward P. Thomas, Jr. and became known as the Thomas Pool in Baker Park. In 2007, another renovation project took place which included a new filtration system, new tile, and coping, white coat resurface, addition of tumble bucket and mushroom water play elements, shade features on deck, portable lifeguard stands, and upgrades in locker room and bathhouse.

Currently, the staff at Thomas Pool consists of approximately 25 seasonal staff to include an aquatics supervisor, concessions staff, swim instruction staff. The pool management company employs an additional 30 staff including pool manager, pool operator and lifeguards.

Both city pools, Thomas Pool in Baker Park and Diggs Pools along Carroll Creek, will open for the 2012 summer season on Saturday, May 26. For more information, visit www.cityoffrederick.com or call 301-600-1492.
