City Sustainability Manager Plans Tree Identification Training Program for Citizens

Frederick, MD – May 5, 2015: Frederick City residents are invited to participate in a tree identification and inventory training session, part of a larger urban tree canopy inventory for The City of Frederick.

This training will serve as a review for those residents who attended the fall tree identification training and to train new residents in tree identification and inventory. This spring’s training will focus on Neighborhood Advisory Councils 10, 11, and 12, but residents in any part of the City are welcomed to attend the training to learn tree identification. No experience is needed to be part of the project and it is free to all City residents. The introduction course will be on Sunday, May 17, 1-4 p.m. Residents will receive the training location upon registration.

“Ultimately, homeowners will have the opportunity to learn about the trees growing in their own yards and the value of those trees for air quality, water quality, and energy savings,” said Jenny Willoughby, the City’s Sustainability Manager. “In addition, the City will gain more detailed information about tree species diversity and how to better prioritize outreach and tree planting efforts.”

Those residents who become trained in tree identification will be asked to assist neighbors to inventory trees on private property. Trained volunteers will collect data about tree species and size in an effort to better understand the City’s tree diversity and help homeowners understand the intangible value of trees in their own yard and neighbors’ yards.

For more information and to register contact Jenny Willoughby via email at Willoughby jwilloughby@cityoffrederick.com.
