Frederick Police Members and Programs Honored at

38th Annual Governor's Crime Prevention Awards


December 15, 2017


FREDERICK, MD - The Frederick Police Department is proud to announce the recognition of members and programs of this agency and the community by the Governor and Maryland Community Crime Prevention Institute.  The award ceremony was held on December 13th in Annapolis, MD.

“Once again it is a great honor to receive the Governor’s Office and the Community Crime Prevention Institute awards for our outreach programs, commented Chief Ed Hargis.    These awards highlight our continuing efforts in building community partnerships so that we can work together to prevent crime.” 


Frederick Police Department - Agency Award

In addition to the above awards, the Frederick Police Department was recognized with a Governor’s Crime Prevention Award for incorporating an overall outstanding crime prevention program as an integral part of their daily operations. The following is a list of just some of the programs, services, and events the Frederick Police Department operates as part of a multi-faceted approach to crime prevention:

  • Youth Police Academy
  • Citizens Police Academy
  • Public Service Announcements on safety tips and crime trends
  • Participation in National Night Out
  • Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.)
  • Residential and Commercial Security Surveys
  • Police Activities League (PAL) and GAL PALS Programs
  • Participation in Youthful Offender Program
  • Active involvement with the Neighborhood Advisory Council (NAC) initiative
  • Pack a Police Car
  • Medication Turn in Events


Drunk Buster Kart Program - Governor’s Award for Outstanding Proactive Crime Prevention Programs

The Drunk Buster Kart is utilized by FPD to provide citizens an educational program illustrating the dangers of operating a motor vehicle while impaired.  The Pedal Kart allows participants to safely drive around a simulated course wearing “impairment goggles”.  This program educates on the dangers of impaired driving.


Monocacy Middle School Criminal Justice Club & Ms. Christine Borman-Bozick - Governor’s Award for Outstanding Proactive Crime Prevention Programs & Citizens

The Criminal Justice Club consists of sixty students who participate on a bi-weekly basis for lectures, hands-on activities and field trips to law enforcement related locations.  Many officers from the Frederick Police Department participate in the Criminal Justice Club to expose the students to different aspects within the police department.  The goal of the Criminal Justice Club is to engage the students at an early age with law enforcement to create positive relationships and understanding of the law enforcement profession.

The Frederick Police Department would like to thank Monocacy Middle School and especially Ms. Christine Borman-Bozick who received a Category C Governor’s Award for the program.  Ms. Borman-Bozick is a Frederick County Public School employee who was instrumental in assisting the Frederick Police Department with this program.  We would also like to recognize

Principal Dr. Stephanie Ware, Assistant Principals Chelsea Skocylas and Reggie Gunter, Former Principal Brian Vasquenza and former Assistant Principal Daniel Enck for their assistance with this program.


Tom Whalen - Governor’s Crime Prevention Award for Citizens

Tom Whalen, morning show host on WFRE radio (99.9) was awarded a Category C Governor’s Award for all his assistance in promoting the Frederick Police Department outreach campaigns and events.
