[ARCHIVED] Frederick Running Festival: May 5th and 6th

The Frederick Running Festival is scheduled for this weekend, with the half marathon set to occur on Sunday morning May 6th.

INCIDENT/ INFORMATION: Frederick Running Festival - May 5 & 6, 2012

The Frederick Police Department reminds citizens, visitors and businesses to prepare for the upcoming Frederick Running Festival scheduled for Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th. Festival events will include a 5k race and a Kids Fun Run on the evening of Saturday, May 5th and the Frederick Half Marathon on Sunday, May 6th.

The Frederick Running Festival will start with a Kids Fun Run on Saturday, May 5th at 5:00 p.m., followed by the Twilight 5k race at 6:00 p.m. The 5k route begins at the Frederick Fairgrounds and follows Monroe Ave. to the Frederick Airport, before ending back at the Fairgrounds. The 5k race shall conclude at approximately 7:30 p.m.

The featured event, the Frederick Half Marathon, will begin at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 6th and will conclude at approximately 10:30 a.m. The race will start and end at the Frederick Fairgrounds and a team relay exchange point will be located at North Frederick Elementary School. The course route has remained relatively consistent with the previous half marathon route in the City. As with the 2011 event, at the start of the race runners will be going out East St. to Monocacy Blvd. and back to S. Market St. One change of note occurs later in the race, when the runners will make a loop through the Monocacy Village neighborhood off of East St.

Festival organizers estimate that approximately 7,500 runners and their families will be participating in this event. The Frederick Police Department would like to remind citizens to be aware that the event will bring not only additional vehicular traffic, but also additional pedestrian and bicycle traffic with the runners, their supporters and first responders protecting our community. Citizens will see a significant police presence all along the route with additional traffic control devices such as cones, barricades, traffic signs and variable message boards to help keep participants safe. Motorists should expect delays and plan additional travel time during the event. All event parking areas will be clearly marked and located close to the Fairgrounds.
