Lawn fertilizer blackout dates will be in effect beginning on November 16, 2019 through February 29, 2020 as authorized by Maryland’s Lawn Fertilizer Law.
Nitrogen and phosphorus are the key nutrients found in most lawn fertilizers and are a threat to local water quality. Applying fertilizers during the winter when the ground is hard and plants are dormant causes an unnecessary buildup of unused nutrients. Snow melt and rain then carry these nutrients to streams, rivers, and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay. Once in our waterways, excess nutrients contribute to algae blooms that have negative impacts to stream health.
Lawn-care professionals and citizens my resume fertilizer application beginning March 1, 2020 as long as heavy rain is not forecasted.
Remember that fertilizer may not be used to de-ice walkways or driveways in accordance with Fertilizer Law.
