City sells property to the Religious Coalition for Emergency Human Needs for $1

The Hayward Road property will become an emergency family shelter.

With a continued focus on serving emerging community needs, The City of Frederick and the Religious Coalition for Emergency Human Needs closed on the sale of a City-owned property located at 7516 Hayward Road on Monday, December 23, 2019, at a sale price of $1. The Board of Aldermen approved the transaction at a public hearing on August 16, 2018.

The portion of the property sold, which includes a historic farmhouse, will become an emergency family shelter, expanding the capacity of the Religious Coalition’s current shelter from 15 to 50 residents. Construction is slated to start mid-2020 with project completion expected in 2021, which will mark the 40th Anniversary of the Religious Coalition.

“We are excited about the progress with the property thus far. We've previously utilized a scattered site approach to shelter families and we've always known that we've needed a fixed, permanent site, and the farmhouse provides that opportunity,” Nick Brown, Executive Director of the Religious Coalition, shared. “This has already been a significant collaboration with the City, and we are grateful for their energy for the project. We hope to make this a wide-ranging community effort to show how supportive, collaborative and generous Frederick can truly be.”

This half-acre property was formerly used by Frederick County Public Schools before the City purchased the property in 2013, at which time a new city water tower was built on a portion of the property.
