The City of Frederick anticipates that the State of Maryland and Frederick County may reopen restaurants for limited indoor and outdoor dining in the near future. Outdoor dining is expected to be highly popular for both patrons and owners. The City’s goal is to directly support restaurant businesses, workers, patrons, and residents with an optimal safe plan for increased outdoor dining in accordance with industry best practices and guidance issued by health officials. Various City departments have evaluated several options for safely increasing outdoor dining and pedestrian accessibility, especially in the historic downtown area. These options consider a reconfiguration of public spaces along sidewalks and street parking areas to increase safe physically-distant pedestrian movement and table spacing as well as the repurposing of parking areas and parks to accommodate al fresco dining.
The City is pleased to share a proposal that offers multiple options for the Market Street area and recommendations for other City retail areas, including the Golden Mile and East Street. Feedback on this proposal and the included options is requested by Saturday, May 30, 2020, at noon. A video overview and link to the feedback survey can be found at bit.ly/FrederickReopens.
The City will be working quickly and strategically with restaurant owners to implement the possible options promptly when in-person dining is permitted. The City thanks the community for its input and feedback on this opportunity.
