At approximately 6:30 p.m. Friday evening, The Frederick Socialists held an "Abolish the Police" rally at Baker Park in Downtown Frederick. The rally included approximately 30 attendees who marched among cars in the streets shortly after 7 p.m., blocking traffic.
FPD officers provided traffic control for the event and worked to ensure the participants and area residents were kept safe. However, during the march the group caused the following property damage:
- Flags were set on fire at the intersection of Bentz & Patrick and 2nd & College.
- The actual street was spray painted at Bentz & Patrick.
- A house was spray painted at 3rd & Bentz.
- A vehicle was vandalized at 6th & Market.
The protest lasted approximately two hours. Once it ended and it was safe to do so, officers detained one adult male as part of our investigation into the vandalism. That male was released from the scene pending further investigation. There were no reported injuries, and police did not use any force throughout the entirety of the protest. No arrests have been made. But the Frederick Police Department is asking anyone who may have had their property or vehicle damaged by spray paint to contact FPD.
