The Directed Patrol Unit of FPD would like to remind owners of motor scooters of measures they can take to prevent theft.
Since April of this year, 17 motor scooters have been stolen, primarily on the west side of the city. To date, 12 have been recovered, and five arrests have been made on juveniles for stealing motor scooters.
Citizens are reminded to NOT rely on the steering column locking mechanism or the ignition key as the sole sources of security, as these measures are easily defeated by thieves. If scooters cannot be locked inside a secure garage, they should be locked with a sturdy locking device through the frame or wheels and in a well lighted area. We recommend owners photgraph their scooters, to include unique identifiers such as damage or decals, and document the VIN.
Citizens are asked to immediately telephone FPD at (301) 600-2102 whenever they observe suspicious activity.
