More Options for Voting: Overview of Upcoming 2021 City Elections

Elections2021It’s an election year in The City of Frederick! This year’s primary election on Tuesday, September 14, 2021, and general election on Tuesday, November 2, 2021, will decide the next Mayor and Board of Aldermen for the City.  Given the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the City has increased accessibility to voting by allowing registered voters to vote by mail, by dropbox, or in person via early voting or day-of voting.

HOW VOTING WILL WORK

All registered voters in The City of Frederick will receive a ballot via mail twenty-one days before both the primary and general elections. Voters can then choose to return the mailed ballot via mail or a ballot drop box  - or - come to the Voting Center to vote in person (during early voting or on election day).

For those who wish to vote via mail:

To vote by mail, return the ballot with the provided postage, ensure that you have followed the instructions accompanying the ballot, and mail it back with a postmark of Election Day (or before). Your ballot must be received before 4:30 p.m. on the First Friday after each Election Day. To ensure that your vote is received on time to be counted, complete and return your ballot promptly upon receipt.

For those who wish to vote via dropbox:

To vote by ballot dropbox, complete and drop off your mailed ballot at one of the seven dropbox locations. Ballot dropboxes will be available beginning in early September for the primary election and mid-October for the general election. The secure locations include the Trinity School Voting Center, the Frederick County Board of Elections Office, the Talley Recreation Center, Hillcrest Commons, the Housing Authority Office, Frederick Community College, and Governor Thomas Johnson High School. A map of these locations, with directions, is available at cityoffrederickmd.gov/2021elections.  Note: dropboxes will be monitored.

For those who wish to vote in person:

To vote in person, you may choose to vote during early voting or election day voting. All in-person voting will be conducted at the Trinity School Voting Center at 6040 New Design Road from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. The primary election early voting is September 8 through September 11, and the primary election day-of voting is September 14. The general election early voting is October 27 through October 30, and the general election day-of voting is November 2. Note: You do not need to bring your mailed ballot with you.

ENSURE YOU ARE REGISTERED

To vote in the City election, you must be 18 years of age, a resident of The City of Frederick, a United States Citizen, and not be disqualified as outlined by Maryland State law. To vote in the Democrat and Republican primaries, a voter must be a registered party member accordingly. Independent or unaffiliated voters, by definition, are excluded from participating in the primary contests.
