FPD utilizing new technology to increase communication with residents

SPIDR Message Example

At a time when communication and engagement with our residents is more important than ever the Frederick Police Department has expanded its efforts in those arenas with the launch of SPIDR Tech software effective March 28, 2022.

SPIDR Tech provides a modern technology platform designed for public safety agencies to improve customer service and increase efficiency for the agency. This customer service infrastructure will assist FPD in improving communication and transparency between the department and the community.

SPIDR Tech sends fully automated text and email messages to 911 callers and victims of crimes. These messages are sent in both English and Spanish.

“The Frederick Police Department is very excited to launch the SPIDR Tech software,” said Lt. Aaron Lapp, Commander of the Technology and Services Division. "This software allows our department to increase our communication with the public while also reducing the need for follow-up calls to our communications center. FPD continually looks to stay current with public safety technology products that can help our officers perform their job duties at a high level and better connect our agency and community."

When a caller calls FPD either through 911 or the non-emergency number (301-600-2102) and generates a call for service, the SPIDR Tech program will send a text message to the caller if they called from a mobile device. That message will acknowledge their call and provide them the time the call was created and the incident number.

The system also tracks times and, in the event an officer’s response surpasses 20 minutes, the caller will receive a courtesy delayed response text.

It is important to note this software only works if the caller calls from a mobile device. Additionally, not all call types will receive this messaging. For sensitive safety matters SPIDR Tech will not send a message to the caller.
