FPD arrested a Smithsburg man for DUI, hit and run, and malicious destruction of property after he repeatedly rammed two parked cars and fled the scene.
On 7/13/2012 at 1:26 AM, the Frederick Police Department received a call about a car that was repeatedly ramming two parked cars in Vienna Ct. The caller said the suspect car left the scene via Willowdale Drive. OFC Irons was on Rt 40 at the time and headed toward the area.
Almost immediately, he observed a vehicle matching the description provided by the caller. It turned from Willowdale Drive onto Rt 40, driving E/B in the W/B lanes. There was no other traffic, and OFC Irons was able to make a U-turn and stop the suspect car, which had heavy rear end damage and a completely broken out rear window. The driver was identified as Michael Eugene Hartman Jr of Smithsburg. A witness was brought to the scene and positively identified Hartman's car. Hartman failed field sobriety testing and was arrested for DUI, hit and run, and malicious destruction of property. The two cars on Vienna Ct, an Altima and a full-sized Blazer, were struck with enough force to turn them sideways from their parking spaces. No nexus between Hartman and these cars has been identified.
Due to the multiple charges, Hartman was not eligible for release from the station to a responsible driver and was taken to Central Booking. At the time of this release, no photo of Hartman was available.
