Christopher’s Crossing Project
Roundabout at Poole Johns Road & Walter Martz Road scheduled to open at 5pm on January 24, 2020
The roundabout portion of the Christopher’s Crossing (Sanner) roadway construction project, which connects Poole Jones Road and Walter Martz Road, is scheduled to open to traffic at 5pm on Friday January 24, 2020.
Road Closure & Detour Information
As part of ongoing construction to extend Christopher’s Crossing between Walter Martz Road/Poole Jones Rd and Crestone Dr, The City of Frederick will be closing Walter Martz Road at Christopher’s Crossing in order to complete construction of a roundabout at the intersection. Walter Martz Road will close on or about October 28, 2019 and is expected to reopen by Mid-January.

The City began construction of a critical missing link of Christopher’s Crossing between Clover Ridge and Walter Martz Road in the Fall of 2018. This segment connects the existing endpoint of Christopher’s Crossing in Clover Ridge to the intersection of Walter Martz Road and Poole Jones Road. Christopher’s Crossing will ultimately extends from U.S. 15 north of the City to U.S. 40 west of the City. The project is being constructed by C. William Hetzer Inc.
To date, the contractor has made significant progress on the project. Work underway or completed includes; installation of perimeter sediment controls, rough grading of the roadway, installation of culverts for the stream crossing, utility installations including storm drain, water and sewer, street light conduits on the south side of the site, and curb and gutter installations along portions of the roadway. Construction of the traffic circle at Walter Martz/Christopher’s Crossing/Poole Jones Road will begin on or about October 22nd dependent upon weather conditions.
The current project completion time frame is mid-Summer of 2020.
Groundbreaking for Major Transportation Route: Christopher’s Crossing Through Sanner Farm
On September 28, 2018, Mayor Michael O’Connor and guests broke ground for the section of Christopher’s Crossing between Clover Ridge and Walter Martz Road. This segment connects the existing endpoint of Christopher’s Crossing in Clover Ridge to the intersection of Walter Martz Road and Poole Jones Road. Christopher’s Crossing ultimately extends from U.S. 15 north of the City to U.S. 40 west of the City. The construction contract was awarded to C. William Hetzer Inc. for $4,929,54485, with completion expected in June of 2020.
This connection is essential to the future development of the City-owned Sanner Farm, which includes multiple public facilities and is vital to providing multiple safe and efficient connections from residential areas in the northwest to downtown Frederick and U.S. 15, Mayor O’Connor said.
This infrastructure will make a big difference to commuters in the Christopher’s Crossing neighborhood, and others in NAC 3,” Mayor O’Connor said. “It’s a great day when we can work on much-needed public infrastructure.
